One Voice Mixed Chorus, Minnesota’s LGBTA chorus, presents four FREE performances of The Pirates of Penzance, Gilbert and Sullivan’s operetta, at the Schubert Club Bandshell on Raspberry Island in the middle of the Mississippi River in downtown St. Paul but with a twist…
One Voice’s gender-bending “Pirates” will be complete with a lesbian pirate King and her swarthy crew of sailors. The show features the Major General’s daughters (men in dresses), dancing, frivolity, a live band and plenty of sing-along opportunities for the audience. Special thanks to the Knight Arts Challenge for their generous support.
On Pride Weekend 2017, get ready for a performance of Gilbert and Sullivan’s The Pirates of Penzance that’s sure to be unlike anything the Twin Cities has ever seen! Set on Raspberry Island in downtown St. Paul, One Voice Mixed Chorus presents a topsy-turvy, gender-bending musical adventure for the whole family, featuring a lesbian pirate king and her swarthy crew of sailors arriving by speedboat, an uproarious appearance from the Major General’s “daughters,” and more! Soloists showcase One Voice singers along with guest artists from among the Twin Cities’ best musical theater actors. Ben Krywosz, artistic director for Nautilus Theater, serves as artistic consultant, and Gary Briggle as stage director, with musical direction by Jane Ramseyer Miller. Join us on the banks of Mississippi River–in your best pirate costume–for a weekend of dancing and frivolity, plus a live band and plenty of sing-along opportunities for the audience.

On Saturday, June 24, The Movement Minneapolis will host a unique fundraiser — a deadlift-only “test of strength” to raise money and build awareness for the Twin Cities’ homeless youth. Cheekily titled “Pull for Pride,” this active, inclusive, festive event will kick off Pride Weekend and highlight the power of a community’s strength.
Co-hosted by Women’s Strength Coalition, the event will benefit Avenues for Homeless Youth, a non-profit dedicated to provide housing, basic needs, and supportive services to help homeless youth, a segment of our population that often feels powerless in the face of trauma and abuse. Avenues is one of the few Home Host programs available for LGBTQ homeless youth. This event is open to all people (trans and cis, intersex, agender, non-binary, women, men) and experience levels.
“Pull for Pride Minneapolis” will feature 50+ lifters, as well as food and beverages, raffle prizes, music, and other shenanigans! Family- and pet-friendly. Come to cheer and experience an event you’ve never seen before.
